Engineering Manager
FULL TIME · Glendale, CA · via Crucial Recruiting
Glendale, CA | On-site | Full-time | $170K–$240K
Crucial Recruiting is partnering with a mission-driven MedTech / healthcare-AI startup using AI to enhance clinical workflows, improve patient outcomes, and bring automation to complex healthcare environments. We are looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager who thrives in deep technical problem-solving, architecture ownership, and developing the engineers on their team.
About the Opportunity
This role is ideal for an engineering leader who wants both technical impact and people leadership — someone who builds, designs, and raises the technical bar across the organization while owning the growth and performance of the engineers who report to them. You will shape system design, build core platform capabilities, ship features, and grow your team through direct management, coaching, and example, spending significant time writing production code and unblocking your team while owning 1:1s, performance development, and hiring.
Responsibilities
Hands-On Design & Development
- Design, build, and evolve a secure, scalable, cloud-native SaaS platform on AWS
- Write and maintain production-quality code across Python, Node.js, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript
- Own and evolve core architectural decisions: data models, APIs, service boundaries, and system reliability
People Leadership & Management
- Directly manage a team of engineers, including regular 1:1s, performance development, and career-growth planning
- Lead hiring: interviewing, evaluating, and onboarding new engineers
- Build a healthy, high-performing culture grounded in ownership, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement
- Set the bar for quality, maintainability, performance, and security through example and coaching
Engineering Excellence
- Lead architecture and design discussions, especially for high-impact or cross-cutting initiatives
- Drive best practices in testing, observability, performance optimization, and secure development
- Influence long-term technical strategy while balancing pragmatic delivery and team capacity
DevOps & Platform Ownership
- Stay hands-on with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure, and deployment workflows
- Partner with DevOps and platform teams to improve reliability, scalability, and developer velocity
- Champion operational excellence: monitoring, alerting, and incident-response readiness
AI-Enabled Product Development
- Translate AI and computer-vision concepts into production systems with product and engineering teams
- Support experimentation, iteration, and scaling of AI-enabled features
- Ensure AI solutions are production-ready, observable, and maintainable — not just prototypes
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with impact at the system or platform level
- 2+ years directly managing engineers, including performance development and hiring
- Proven experience designing and scaling cloud-native SaaS architectures, ideally on AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS)
- Strong hands-on CI/CD and DevOps experience, owning systems end-to-end
- Proficiency in Python, Node.js, React, and TypeScript with a track record of shipping production code
- Experience in startup or scale-up environments, comfortable making pragmatic trade-offs
Nice to Have
- AI, machine learning, or computer vision in production
- Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7)
Technical Environment: AWS-hosted, cloud-native SaaS. Python, Node.js, React, GraphQL, TypeScript. CI/CD and DevOps-owned infrastructure.
